If you know Olives Courtyard, then you may have noticed a few subtle changes in the last week. What are they? Well the Courtyard now benefits from closed circuit television. Rest assured there’s nobody watching the images live, – they are though being recorded.
Quite a few of you may be asking why install CCTV in Olives Courtyard? Well, over the last few months there have been a number of mindless acts of vandalism, including graffiti, and we very much hope that CCTV will cut down on further occurrences and that it will assist in any offenders being identified and punished.
So, if you are looking to buy books, jigsaws, CD’s & DVD’s, require hairdressing, need an accessory for your pet, double glazing is your thing and or have time for food why not visit the Courtyard in the knowledge that Bliss Hair, Paws & Claws, The Lions, Crystal Vision and Thyme for Food and Friends may be for you and if you should explore you do so in the knowledge that you are protected by CCTV.
What a great night last Friday was for Uckfield Chamber of Commerce members at the Lewes and Wealden Business Awards organised by the Sussex Express at the East Sussex National Hotel. As Chamber Vice President our Chris Lawson was asked by Chamber President Fiona Monson to attend the Awards, as she had another commitment, in order to present the Award for Education, Training & Motivation which was sponsored by the Chamber. The Award was won by Future Now.
In all there were 16 Awards and 10 of these were won by Uckfield Chamber members and it was a particularly good night for car leasing group Neva Consultants who scooped Medium Business of the Year, the Innovation Award and Overall Business of the Year.
Other Uckfield Chamber winners included Uckfield High Street retailer Carvills, bespoke kitchen manufacturer Levick Jorgensen, civil engineers C J Thorne and the Bluebell Railway. Chris also had the opportunity to meet the new conservative MP for Lewes Maria Caulfield.
One of the highlights of the evening for Chris was the appearance during dinner of the amazing Wurlitzer organ which is apparently Europe’s largest Wurlitzer theatre organ and which rose up through the stage and gave a short concert.
Once again we were delighted to be one of the sponsors for the Crowborough Cancer Research UK Summer Lunch at the East Sussex National Hotel near Uckfield last Wednesday, 17th June. There was a good turnout for this event and the speaker, Dr Sam Godfrey was exceptional. He was both informative, amusing, entertaining and clearly passionate about his subject which was the new Crick Institute which is being established in London.
We hosted a table of 10 including clients, friends and colleagues. Pictured with partners Chris and Julia Lawson at the pre-lunch reception is Della Ferrari. Both Julia and Della have experienced cancer and indeed shared the same oncologist. Despite purchase of a significant quantity of raffle tickets no one on our table was successful in winning a prize. However a very convivial time was had and we understand the raffle raised some £1,500 for the charity with figures overall for the event to follow.
Lawson Commercial have sold two interconnecting industrial units on the Ghyll Road Industrial Estate at Heathfield. Providing over 2,500 sq ft of ground floor area the building was sold for a price close to the asking price of £245,000. It has been acquired by local business County Group for further expansion in the Town. We are always pleased to see a local business expanding and this follows on the successful sale of premises elsewhere on the Ghyll Road Estate which we also negotiated to County Group. It again highlights the strong demand for freehold industrial premises in the Wealden area.
We have just let prominent industrial premises at 1 The Enterprise Centre on Bell Lane, Uckfield, almost directly opposite Screwfix, to HSS Hire. They are well known as a leading provider of tools, equipment and related services and Uckfield joins the 265 branches they have already got in the UK. Since Gamble Jarvis and South Coast Tool Hire left Bell Lane some years ago there has been a shortage of this type of business in the area so they will provide a much needed service. They will also complement this part of Bell Lane joining Screwfix, Alsford Timber, Travis Perkins and The Store Depot all within a couple of minutes walk.
Following extensive refurbishment some delightful serviced offices have been created above Mister Smith Interiors in Croft Road, Crowborough. This is a first class location being opposite not only the free shoppers car park but Waitrose supermarket and restaurant. We can vouch for their coffee!
There are three rooms available, two of which overlook Croft Road itself, which have been refurbished and redecorated. They also include some office furniture. All in all they provide first class accommodation ready for immediate occupation. The smallest office is 138 sq ft, the medium office is 205 sq ft and the largest is 263 sq ft. There is a nice, large kitchen for sharing together with some good cloakroom accommodation. Each office has 2 desks plus chairs and a filing cabinet and they are all available on an annual licence basis. Included in the monthly charge are contributions to business rates, water rates, electricity, air conditioning, repairs, cleaning of windows, tea & coffee, insurance and alarm maintenance.
These really are very good offices but with only three available you may need to move fast to secure one.
The Kings Church lease on Sussex Studios in Grange Road, Uckfield is coming to an end and they will not be renewing as they have outgrown the space. The building is right in the heart of Uckfield being only yards away from the High Street lends itself very well to a studio/worship form of business with a huge 730 sq ft meeting room on the ground floor with access to kitchen and cloakroom facilities. There is some very good, useful storage on the 1st floor in a boarded attic and the lower ground floor has been refurbished to provide most attractive, light, airy offices which are carpeted and have gas central heating + cloakroom and tea station. There is parking to the side and to the front plus good disabled access. Prior to the KIngs Church’s use of the building, which has been for some 10 years, the building was used by the Red Cross. Overall it is some 2,500 sq ft over the 3 floors and is available on a new lease at a rent of £18,500 pa.
In addition to Uckfield Chamber of Commerce, Lawson Commercial are also keen supporters of Crowborough Chamber of Commerce and we were very pleased to be one of the lead sponsors for their Summer Fun Day. This was held last Saturday 30th May and was a great day. The weather kept fine despite starting off rather windy and thousands of people turned up to enjoy the event. There was live entertainment with several bands, choirs etc, performing in the centre square and a vast array of stalls selling a wide selection of goods including several visiting traders from France.
Pictured is our Chris Lawson with Claire Woolgar, Crowborough Chamber Secretary, at the Chamber stall. The Day takes a huge amount of organisation and it’s success is largely down to Claire and her husband Jeremy who is Crowborough Chamber’s President. The event is of great benefit to the Town and in particular to the business community so out congratulations go to Jeremy and Claire and the rest of the Crowborough committee for another successful day.
